April New Member Lunch – BOD Spotlight: Steve Nargang, Communications Director!
Welcome to our New Member Lunch spotlight! Each month, a guest from the Board of Directors will be joining us at the new member lunch (NML) to introduce themselves and tell us a little bit about their role and background. This month, we’re joined by Steve Nargang, PE, Communications Director of SMPS Chicago!
The Communications Committee is responsible for the Chapter’s communications through its newsletter, social media, website, and media. The Committee will also work with each committee to ensure information flows to the chapter to allow for member participation and inclusion in all Chapter activities. This committee keeps the chapter connected to each other, ideas, and opportunities.
In advance of this month’s NML, here’s a little bit about Steve:
Where do you work and what’s your role?
Gage Consulting Engineers, Inc. – Vice President, Director of Development – responsible for overall growth of the firm
When and why did you join SMPS Chicago?
Started attending in 2010, became an official member in early 2011 – mainly for the connections with other professionals in the A/E/C industry.
How has SMPS been beneficial to you, your firm, and/or your career?
I’ve met countless networking partners and many new clients for Gage Engineering thru attending events and committee interaction. I’ve gained professional development thru the educational programs and technical presentations.
How can a new member of SMPS get the most out of their membership?
Get out of your comfort zone by trying new things and meeting people outside your normal circle. Join a committee right away, start connecting and contributing.
What was the most fun event you attended for SMPS?
Attending the Build Business national conference last year was a great experience professionally, and a lot of fun with the group we had there.
What do you do to kick back and relax?
I’ve been a musician since childhood (starting with classical piano), and have a recording studio where I do sound engineering & mixing. Since forming a band about 10 years ago, I’ve taken up the drums and other types of keyboards.
What is your favorite musical group/performer?
I’ve always been a big fan of Rush, and attended their latest Chicago concert – with a guest appearance of the Stanley Cup on stage. My favorite band over the last few years is Porcupine Tree.
What is the most interesting place you’ve visited?
Queenstown, New Zealand – one of the most beautiful places on earth
About the program: Exclusive to our new members, we have a monthly lunch program for the entire first year of membership! These lunches are designed to familiarize new members with the chapter, expand their networks, and demonstrate the various ways to become involved.
